Today morning traffic was blocked off on many major roads in Delhi resulting chaos and many people not being able to reach their work place. A few people in our office also called in to say that they are stuck in traffic jam and wont be able to get to work. I didn't know the reason for these road blocks but I assumed it must be something really important to cause such a huge loss of productivity to so many people.
Well, it turns out I was wrong. VHP (the radical Hindu organization) had organized a chakka-jaam (road blockade) across the country today to protest against the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project which will dredge a channel in a narrow strip of sea between India and Sri Lanka, reducing distances and cutting costs for freight traffic. Now you may ask why would VHP have a problem with something like that? Were they worried about environmental effects on the marine life? Nope. VHP claims that this project will destroy a bridge between India and Sri Lanka which was built by Lord Ram. Firstly, there is no concrete evidence to validate this fact. Scientists claim that is actually a natural structure that developed from sedimentation. Secondly, even if it was indeed built by Lord Ram, who gave VHP the right to protest by disrupting traffic and causing problems to millions of people across the country? Protesting thousands of miles away in Delhi makes no sense. Maybe they were too lazy to go all the way down south to actually protest onsite?
It is surprising and both funny and sad that even today it is possible to get away with this kind of anti-social behavior. I am sure Lord Ram will not not have approved of it!
This is truly sad.. I wish people would wisen up to the fact that disrupting the life of thousands is not the way to get anything done.
What do you expect we Hindus should do? A government under an Italian christian questions the very existence of our gods. I am against bandh politics but sometimes in India to pressurise the government it becomes necessary . Also, just because there is no evidence it does not mean our gods don't exist. Let them prove otherwise .

I agree with you Arun that just because there is no evidence it does not mean that God did not exist but surely God in the incarnation of Lord Ram who was "Maryada Purshottam "(The ideal man )would never like so many people to face so much trouble and harrasssment .
These VHP guys are lunatic idiots using dumbass reasons to disrupt public life. Why the hell should anyone care if there was some bridge in that place or not. Even this Arun Kamath seems to be one of those idiotic morons having dumbass beliefs. Such morons should be shot publicly and defaced. They have no right to live in this world.
I think VHP showed an immense amount of patience if all their protests caused were traffic problems.
At the end of the day this protest was tame compared to what might have happened in other countries if Christ or Allah had been declared to not exist!

then would like to quote on "Dhurendar Bhatawdekar quoting for Arun Kamath -- Such morons should be shot publicly and defaced."
Why not people like "Dhurendar Bhatawdekar" should have the same treatment he was suggesting for, who thinks they have right to protest things by killing ??
It doesn't gives anyone the right to destroy something even in the name of development, which is related to sentiments of any community.
Agreed we don't have concrete facts for Ram Sethu, so if it gives you right to destroy it then please destroy all the "Mandir, Masjeed and Church" with it cause we also don't have facts for existence of GOD.
Beside this what is the purpose of our own country and freedom if our "Dharama" is not safe in here.
Every time when something arise to destroy my Dharama i will stand against it. Cause i believe in my Karama and dharama as well, and protecting my dharama is my karama also "i'm proud to be indian and even proud of being "Hindu".

Hey Gaurav who gave you a right to say that the bandh organized by VHP was not justified. Is it you who would decied whats right and whats wrong in the country....and also remember that its the bandh like these which were extensively used in India's freedom struggle as well. By the way do scientists have finally said that its a natural formation....they only say that they think its may be a natural formation. And even if it is a natural formation and billions of hindus beleive that it is made by Shri Ram then thats it no more question its Ram Setu. Your companies productivity suffered......sorry for that.
