Against all odds

Entrepreneurship is about defying odds. And if you think that odds are stacked against you, then wait till you read this amazing story of Sharathbabu who rose from the slums of Chennai to become a successful entrepreneur.

When you constantly worry about the next square meal, you do not dream of becoming a doctor or an engineer. The only thing that was on my mind was to get a good job because my mother was struggling a lot.

We bitch a lot about our education system and how flawed it is (I am actually writing a seperate blog post on it!). But inspite of its flaws, occasionally it manages to support and produce gems like Sharathbabu. Without all the scholarships, education of many such deserving people would be impossible. For once, taxpayer money is being put to good use!

Its is to good to know that we also have some people in INDIA like "SHARATH BABU".

You stated that " When you constantly worry about the next square meal, you do not dream of becoming a doctor or an engineer. The only thing that was on my mind was to get a good job because my mother was struggling a lot. " May be now i'm able to get the essence of the saying "ALWAYS AIM SKY HIGH".

Thanx for the story of sharathbabu...

Thanks for the story about my namesake. The funny thing about entrepreneurs - I am one and I know a lot of them - that not a single entrepreneur I have known did it for the money. Some did it for the goal of booking profits, which is not the same thing as making money. Most did it because it was an itch they had to scratch, i.e., "I have this fantastic idea, blah blah blah." Some may have done it because they had no other option.

Bottom line - nobody in my experience decided to become an entrepreneur because he or she wanted to be rich. Happy Labor Day!

Thanks for pointing out the article, Gaurav. It is people like him that India needs today...pretty sure there are scores of other gems yet to be found.

Ahh, just read it on Rediff.
And then landed here :)

Wonderful and inspiring story. Thanks for bringing it up and sharing.

Thanks everybody. Glad you liked the story!

Wonderful and inspiring narrative...there must be thousands of other true INDIAN GEMS waiting to be discovered..
have heard about this teacher in bihar who conducts classes freely for the poor in villages ( Super 30s ..i think ) which trains students to clear the JEE.
