Delhi Metro comes to my house!

The word is that the metro line to Dwarka will become operational by the end of this month! I can't contain my excitement ! And if you are wondering why I am so excited then obviously you didn't grow up in Delhi. And obviously you never had to hang on for your dear life in crowded DTC buses in sweltering heat. And clearly, you didn't leave Delhi to visit other countries, see their Metro and wistfully say "When will we have something like this in Delhi" and most certainly you did not mutter to yourself "Not in this lifetime!".

Because if you had done any of that, you would know why I am excited!

Oh, I remember the DTC buses of yore so vividly, and most of my memories have acquired the patina of nostalgia and hence they are now all golden. Last year I saw a cold water wallah next to a bust stop in Delhi and my first reaction, the feeble stomached NRI that I have now become, was that one drink of that water and I would be in a hospital for a week. But then I smiled, because in the seventies, while traveling in the swelterning heat of Delhi on those DTC buses, a glass of chilled water for 5 paise was my just reward at every bus stop. I don't think a cold Kingfisher has tasted that delicious.

Speaking of metro, have you heard anything about the Gurgaon line? Is it coming from Dwarka or Qutub?

I am not sure but I think the line to Gurgaon is planned along the MG road. But then I had heard that the conservationalists were complaining that the metro will spoil the beauty of Qutub Minar. So I don't know what the status is. More than the metro, everybody is waiting for the toll-way along NH8 to get completed! It will make commute to Gurgaon from Dwarka and rest of Delhi really fast!

The last I heard on the Gurgaon Metro was that the MG road line was comletely shelved and now the Haryana govt has proposed extension from Dwarka. Not great news for Gurgaon residents like me (even though it'll pass next to my house) because getting to CP through this route would mean more than an hour of metro ride. The Dwarka-CP route already takes over 45 minutes.

Manu, I had no idea the Dwarka-CP run is 45 minutes. One hour to CP by metro will be no fun. I called a cousin of mine who is a pretty senior guy in the Delhi Metro and he confirmed that the conservationalists are opposing the Qutub line BUT, and that's the BUT that may ultimately prevail, the Metro favors the Qutub line over Dwarka for Gurgaon.

If you get a chance, fill me on the tollway.

I agree that extending the Dwarka line to Gurgaon might not make that much sense though it will definitely be of use to me :)

The tollway is a 22km long elevated expressway being built over NH8 to connect Delhi to Gurgaon. It starts a little after Dhaula Kuan and goes all the way to Rajiv Chowk in Gurgaon. It is similar to the DND flyway that connects Noida to Delhi. When completed it will ease the pressure on NH8 which is extremely choked during the rush hours.

I have grown up in Delhi and not only hung out of Delhi buses but much more (read the blank noise project post), been outside, used their metros (Tokyo, Helsinki, paris to be precise)..but I certainly didnt feel that I wouldn't see it in this lifetime in my own desh :)

Well i am quite happy about the way things are moving in dwarka, the much needed flyover first and then the greatest bonus-the delhi metro,But what about the other important facilities required to unwind on a weekend or in the evenings after work.there are no good restaurants, yes pizza hut opened recently and there is dominoes but apart from that nothing like you get in south delhi.there are no malls at all at a time when even the remotest parts of NCR are getting them,no hospitals,no hotels,no cinemas, absolutely nothing in the name of entertainment except for quite a few parks.DDA should plan for local clubs(not just sports complexes) ,bars, discos, amusement parks and atleast two multiplexes. And please give us some decent shopping malls.

I understand your excitement about the Metro. I must admit that personally the Metro experience was a nice one for me too.
But when I become a bit patriotic and start looking at the bigger picture I really get frustrated about the DMRC project. All over the world metro rail, especially on elevated corridor, is considered as an outdated technology. Had the Metro been developed 20 years back when it was first planned, it would have been feasible. But now under the prsent scenario it just is a deceptive way of showing infrastructural development before the Commonwealth Games. The Metro is suffering losses for two years in a row, yet they are going ahead with this project. Soon when it will be time for changing the trains and maintainence DMRC will declare that it is broke. Then they will be running outdated trains and will go the Air India way. But no media will make this whole thing an issue till the Commonwealth Games. I personally did a lot of research and came up with some interesting facts and figures about DMRC. is there any hope that metro from dwarka to gurgon will be passing by palam vihar, with a halt at palam vihar

Is there any direct bus service from dwarka sector11 to gurgaon.

i would like to say that in new gurgaon master plan there is one road from dwarka to behind new palam vihar, when it will be started , we are afraid , give is the right information for this

i am pleasantly amazed to see this new residential zone called palam vihar. i am also amazed to see the bottleneck position of this area due to stupid unutilization of the railhead lying almost dead beside this colony which can even take a modern metro with little money.
