But the realization that there are other career opportunities comes only when have that much exposure in life. In India the pressure on a student begins to mount up right from high school board examinations. A student doesn't have the time and exposure to explore the fields that he is interested in and what he wants to become in life.
This is even true for people who have cracked JEE (for people who dont know - it's an enterance test for getting into IITs). Remember the time when we all (I too am a graduate from IIT - IITK to be specific....graduated this year!) go for orientation and fill up the forms for choosing the branches on engineering. There is a set pattern - CSE, EE, ME etc. and harly 5% of the students dare to choose differently - again lack of exposure and thought process. And as you must also have had noticed that many students deserved to be in a different branch than the one they chose or were "forced" into!
After writing my high school exams I didnt even know what IITs were.....but I saw all my classmates (who were top rankers in school) join JEE coachings, I followed the same trend as lakhs of other students do them do. I don't think I ever asked myself the question whether it's the right decision of not.
Compare a student from a metropolitan like Delhi to one like Lucknow (from where I am). Both are cities but there is a huge difference in the way people think in these two places. When I was preparing for JEE (in Lucknow) I saw a huge number of JEE aspirants who dropped an year or more to prepare for JEE.....but the thinking of the students from Delhi were a lot different. For them one year meant a lot. They had a lot of alternate plans after getting out of school even after being unsuccessful in JEE.
So it is at the school level that the education needs to be given to encourage students to explore their inner selves to get to know whats the right path for them in life.

Roorkee Engg College and IIT Gauhati are the two additions to the earlier six. .So eight locations.

Let's face it , there don't exist too many options in a country like India. Engineering, Medicine and MBA(most bright ppl who goto DU, go for this after their course). And I would blame the govt for this, they continue to harp on the success that IIT'ians and IIM'ites have had all over the world and in the process neglect other areas.

I myself didn't want to do engineering , as my entire family is into that side, but there weren't many options at that time. Now that I have completed my Engg, I am extremely interested in Journalism, arts and Media. I know ppl who have dropped 2-3 years to get into IIT.

Although the IIT's and IIM's are great institutes their we are too obsessed with them. The situation is very different in the US and Australia, and other countries , where the pressure is really less on students and they even take an year off after their 12th to figure it what they have to do.

Even though everyone seems to be wanting to become an engineer, there are still quite a lot going in to business etc. Nearly 2 lac are going to give the CAT this year and this no. keeps increasing every year. The numbers for medical also keep increasing. With a billion of us there are always large enough numbers in the vaguest of fields even if there is so much emphasis on engineering. However, if i was doin engineering rgt now, i would have a better chance of landing a job in U.S after graduation as compared to India.

In the past decade or so the number of colleges/universities offering engineering degrees has grown into hundreds. Bangalore, Pune, Manipal, etc. come to mind. Seems like "inflation" of education where value and quality of a engineering degree keeps dropping. However IITs have maintained their position and are known to have a fair admission process and produce quality graduates as recognized by employers and universities worldwide. This probably explains to some extent why we have 200,000 kids trying to get in.

But I agree that people in India do have a herd mentality and out of the box thinking is needed..

I am in unison with Gaurav on this. The minute you deviate from the 'Great American Dream' algorithm, you are ridiculed. And engineering happens to be the heart of it. To deviate you need courage, maturity and an out of the box though process, which most of us (atleast I) dont have at 16. However, if at every major intersection, we think whether the next step is right for us, we would be better off.

I think more of it is because of the higher chances of getting well paid jobs that the intelligent youth in India is taking IIT path. Another big reason is for science (esp. life scienes- molecular biology, genomics, proteomics), arts and media - India doesnt have the best hi-tech resources in the world. I myself had a bachelors in chemical engineering and was working in a biotech company, where i was facinated with the root level process and decided to go to sciences. But since I couldnt find good advance level resources in India - I did my masters in life sciences at Virginia tech in US. It takes a lot to renounce the hi-paid engineering position and plunge into basic sciences and not everybody in India can afford to go to foreign universities to get the advance level science degrees. IIT and IIMs are hence the popular options.

Rashi that depends on if you can manage IIT coaching along with your regular school studies. If you feel you can take out enough time for devoting to IIT coaching after taking care of your school curriculum, then I would suggest taking coaching during your schooling and try to clear the exam in your first attempt.

i hold an opinion that going to a coaching centre leads to only peer pressure like"which batch u are in?"(students who go there might understand what i am trying to say).An optimum way to prepare is by self -study and doing solved papers from these institutes at home. for clarifying doubts, ushoul be in contact with a person who either

Engineering have always been a reputed profession to covet.However,in todays scenario engg. has lost the lusture once it had and this is because of the gamut of engineering colleges in every nook and corner of india,even in the galli-mohalas.But on the other side of the coin,its easy for a carrier oriented person to earn its bread and butter very easily as there is comparitively less struggle to get a job when you have a vocatonal degree.But anyhow something must be done to maintain the class of engg.Grading must be given to colleges and must be taken into consideration when a student aspire for the job.Let us make things a bit more vulnerable.

WELL I WANT TO SAY THAT ALL THE INSTITUTES ARE SAME. INDIVIDUALS R BETTER THAN INTITUTES. BECAUSE YOU GET YOUR TYPE OF TEACHER, BUT IN INSTITUTES THERE ARE SOME TEACHERS WHICH R NOT GOOD BUT U HAVE TO SPEND 1 HOUR IN THERE CLASSROOM.
ALL INST. PROMISE VERY BIG THINGS BUT THE REALITY IS DIFFRENT.

Mr Bansal used abusive language with Mr Nitin Vijay and Mr vijay left the institute to start an individual coaching of his own.This year Mr Bansal has 410 batches in Class 12 with around 90 students in each batch.Last year the total no of students were around 12000.Students of lower batches give up almost totally.In my hostel there was a student named Durlabh Katre who was in D-7,the last batch he resorted to smoking,drinking and spending nights in cyber cafes.His parents came to know and took him back home.Three months later Igot from Durlabh's friend that frustrated by life he committed suicide.

I took this decision cuz I have noted our youth goin crazy Over becumin an engineer and then goin abroad for earning quick n heavy bucks...!

but there are few who desire to be the part of govt...and run THE COUNTRY..!!

nd then these illiterate politicians [ I m not saying all r but most of them r] run the country in the way they want..!
