iPhone 3G to cost an arm and a leg?

View Comments

If Tech2 is to be believed, then my plans of retiring my good old N70 might have to be shelved. I have been waiting for the iPhone to launch in India for a while now but at at a reported price of Rs. 31,000 it is simply not worth it. I find it hard to believe that a product that sells for $200 in the US (with a phone plan) would cost 4 times more over here. If that indeed turns out to be true, then shame of Airtel and Vodafone for not coming up with a better price plan. I am pretty sure that the device will come with a service provider lock in. In the US and elsewhere, service providers usually give steep discounts on the price of the device in such situations because it effectively binds the customer to them for a long period of time. However, it looks like that the Indian service providers want to have their cake and eat it too!

iPhone 3G is expensive if compared to the older one. The retail price is less at 199$ but if you calculate the amount of money you will pay over two years, its way too expensive.

It’s pretty expensive in New Zealand too – around NZ$1000 for the 16GB model (without a plan). It’s slightly cheaper up front if you sign up for a shockingly pricey monthly plan: NZ$599 for the phone then NZ$130/month for 500M of traffic. Ouch!

Whoever head of a cheap Apple product, ever? I guess it’ll come down to getting your NRI relatives to send you one from US and unlocking it here. So I’ll stick to a HTC Touch till then.
    Although there are other too…

If you want to be fair, the cost of the iPhone in the US over two years is approximately $2000, usage included. At Rs. 31,000 for the phone and say Rs. 1,5000 per month, that comes to Rs. 67,000 for two years in India, or about $1,600.
From many reviews on the net, the reason not to buy an iPhone 3g will not be the price – it seems to be a super-hyped premature piece of junk. Stories abound of potential hardware problems with the Infineon chipset leading to terrible reception (even without 3g), definite software problems leading to hour long synchronization process with the computer, lack of basic features such as ability to use the phone as a cellular modem, GPS not locking in many places, inability to use landscape mode for SMS, complete lack of MMS, no support for video, etc. Compared to the original iPhone, this seems to be one step forward, two steps back (the original iPhone also doesn’t support any of the above but I haven’t heard of anyone complaining they couldn’t make a simple phone call!)

    Why 31k?
I feel that neither Airtel nor Vodafone would like to subsidize the iPhone. They know for a fact that:
    1. Subscribers would not stick to a 2 year agreement – blame the fast mobile technology and the fickle Indian consumer who crave for the new phones (people who are reading this – how many cells have you changed in the last one year?)
    2. Sooner or later they would be unlocked and would move away from their plans. In fact unlocking the ip3g would almost get a boost(!) if there are cheap ones available.
But apple should have considered the boost it would get from the Indian market and worked something out – even if it meant cutting down on some features (hey who wants 3G when we are far from it?)
I was considering buying the phone till today morning… not anymore.

Yes its true the prices are as below
    1. 8 GB (Black) for Rs 31000
    2. 16GB (White & Black) for Rs 36100
And they are marketing it the same way the do in the US as per the mailer…
“Three Airtel stores, one each in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore will open at the stroke of midnight 12.00am (Friday Morning) on August 22nd.
Join us early on the red carpet as we camp out throughout the evening.
We are expecting some long queues, so plan your day and reach the location as soon as possible. Remember, our stock is limited and will be available only on first cum first basis.”
Well guess what, the hype and hysteria continues, but the price…I will stick to my Nokia, it’s way more usable and cost effective.

I waited a long to get the iPhone
but 31K is too much and when others are getting it for cheap price.
Samsung already has a iPhone cousin ?(touchwiz) phone for 20K and 5MP camera.
And soon Nokia will also launch touch mobile

    Hi
There is a myth in the market place on low pricing of the product (reference price point being Rs. 8000 or Rs.12000/- which
refers to AT&T pricing of USD 199 or USD 299).
The reports don’t factor the commitment which a customers needs to give for a particular Price Plan for a period of 24 Months
in the case of AT&T. For O2 the commitment is for 18 months with selected plans.
But, if we calculate other cost like montly rental for voice, i.e., 69.99 (USD), the total cost of ownership for the period
of 24 months for a 8 GB model comes around Rs.81000/-! The total cost of ownership for O2 is around Rs.200000/- over a period
    of 18 months.
In first look it looks high, but in long term, it is still cheaper in India. So, don’t stop urself from buying this lovely
    gadget…

    Hi
A bit of relief. Now airtel is providing option of EMI to buy iPhone (www.airtel.in/iphone3g). At least, now people who were
expecting to be in range of 16-20K can think again to buy it with EMI option. What you say guys? Can we hope to get its price
    down in future as well?
